Have You Read This Book?

I stumbled upon this post today at Starry Sky Ranch. Midway through the post, the author mentions a book called A Montessori Mother by Dorothy Canfield Fisher, which was written in 1912. It's out of print, but I was thrilled to find the book in its entirety (library card pockets and all) through Google Book Search.

After a quick perusal, I find I can't "put it down" (what's the equivalent expression when you're reading a book online?). The author gives very detailed descriptions of a day she spent in one of Maria Montessori's Casas, and I find it fascinating. I hope you enjoy it too!

  1. Hi Jennie. I followed your link but can't see where I can either download the book or view it. Did you have to purchase it? I'm intrigued!

  2. Hi Amber,

Thanks for letting me know! I've updated the link - would you please let me know if you can find the book now? There should be two options - one for "reading" the book and one for downloading it. If you click Read This Book, you should be able to see it.

    Thanks again!

  3. Thanks for the link. I started reading it...how cool to read something like that written so long ago. I like her perspective as a mother. Thanks again!

  4. Hello again :)

I still don't seem to be able to read it... Not sure what I'm missing seeing that Hannah was able to. Can you possibly tell me *where* on the screen the "Read this book" button is? It's driving me a little crazy - I'm obsessed with reading it ;) LOL.

I loved reading the post from Kim at Starry. She speaks with such wisdom. I had printed that post off & read it before I went to bed last night. Thanks for linking to it.

Looking forward to cracking this "mystery" :)

  5. Hey Amber,

I'm not sure why the link's not working for you, but try this: Go to http://books.google.com/books

Search for "A Montessori Mother" by Dorothy Canfield Fisher. When it pops up, you *should* just be able to click on it and read it. Unfortunately there's not an option for sharing it with you, or I would try that.

As another option, if this still doesn't work, Google allows users to download the book, which I've done - it's a big file, but I could always try to email it to you or upload it to box.net.

Hope that helps! Just let me know if you need any other help finding it. (I think you'll think the book is worth it :)

  7. Hi Amber,

I've uploaded the book to box.net. You should be able to download it here: http://www.box.net/shared/l82m0kr2m9

I hope this works! And thanks for your longer comment on my earlier post - I have many thoughts to share and I will try to respond as soon as possible.

  8. Hi Jennie,
I'm loving the book! Thanks so much for your help in downloading it.

It's so full of insight & wisdom but through such a familiar gaze. So amazingly accessible for something written in 1912!

I'm maybe about a third through & am sure to post something about it (& your original post, if that's okay :) as soon as I'm finished.

I'm also really looking forward to reading some of your responses to my other Q's also... and had another! Which is whether you imagine homeschooling your children with Montessori past the 3 - 6 ages?

Hope you're having a fun weekend...

  9. Hi Jennie :)

I was browsing a book on Google Reader last night that I see as a "limited preview" & was wondering if you would mind doing me the favour of seeing if the full edition is available to you in "your region". Would you mind? You might be interested to read it too! The book is called "Montessori for the new Millenium" by Roland A. Wentworth.

No worries if you can't... you're just the first person I thought of!

  10. Hi Amber,

I tried, but unfortunately, the book is available only as a limited preview here, too.

Sorry - wish I could have been of help!

  12. Gee, I should check myself before I publish my comment - did I want to say 'trying' anymore times?! Serves me right for talking to munchkins while I type. LOL ;)
